Bart-Jaap Verbeek

Bart-Jaap Verbeek is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Political Science, Radboud University Nijmegen. His research project focuses on the politics of regulating transnational investment flows between the European Union and Latin America from a critical political economy perspective. In doing so, he will identify and explain the motives of the agents involved in driving and contesting the governance of investment flows, and the ways in which regulatory practices are framed and institutionalised. The project goes beyond the generic and isolated discussions of international investment agreements by embedding them in the broader context of transnationalisation of production, processes of financialisation, and the ambitions in EU external policies in a rapidly changing global economic order.

Bart-Jaap holds a master’s degree in Regional Geography from the Utrecht University and a master’s degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Amsterdam. Outside academia, he writes for La Chispa, a Dutch magazine on social, political, economic and cultural developments in Latin America.
